Digital Citizens

Students and Instructors in digital-rich learning environments must become knowledgeable about online safety and digital citizenship issues. Without proper online habits and etiquette, it is more likely that an undesirable situation may occur. There are many resources and procedures that school administrators can use that will help support students and instructors with using new technologies in the classroom.

In the article, What Your Students Really Need to Know About Digital Citizenship (http://www.edutopia.org/blog/digital-citizenship-need-to-know-vicki-davis) creating digital citizens in our students requires both proactive and experiential knowledge.  There are many activities and resources available for school administrators to use or encourage usage that help students obtain this knowledge.

Task #4-In this topic, we will be creating a Digital Citizenship and Safety Plan.  This plan will detail the resources, goals, and activities that would ensure that students and teachers will be working in a safe digital environment. Here is a template that you may use to create your plan.

What will you want students to know? What activities and steps will help with this knowledge? What are the resources you will want to use?

To answer these questions, begin by investigating what digital citizenship, safety procedures, and online training is already taking place in your school.  What are the highlights of your current plan?  What is still needed? Decide what items might still be required and that will need to be added to your plan.  Use the resources provided to learn what other school districts recommend.  Finally, consider what resources are available to you that will help with the implementation of your plan.

Here are some resources that will help you:

Administrator Tip: eMINTS teachers with the help of their students,  often create classroom usage policies (CUPs).  These policies often contain procedures and behaviors that promote online safety, equipment care, and digital citizenship.  Ask your teachers what some of these procedures are and how they are guiding technology usage in the classroom. https://sites.google.com/a/emints.org/105-digital-citizenship-fy17/why/classroom-use-policies
